LLN Highlights Research Findings on Corporal Punishment at Janakpur Stakeholders Meeting
On Sunday, 25 May 2025, Legal Literacy Nepal (LLN) hosted a stakeholders meeting in Janakpur, Madhesh Province, to share the outcomes of a recent study examining corporal punishment in Nepalese schools. The event brought together educators, community representatives, and child rights advocates to discuss strategies for eliminating this harmful practice.
During the session, LLN’s Executive Director, Om Prakash Sen Thakuri, presented the major findings and recommendations from the study. The research revealed that corporal punishment remains a widespread issue in schools and outlined its negative impact on students' psychological well-being, emotional development, and academic achievement.
The meeting served as an open forum for dialogue, where participants exchanged perspectives, voiced concerns, and discussed practical, non-violent alternatives to physical discipline. The study also identified underlying factors and stakeholders contributing to the persistence of corporal punishment—key elements for informing effective solutions.
LLN reiterated its commitment to eradicating corporal punishment through legal literacy, community engagement, and the promotion of positive discipline practices. By supporting teachers and communities in adopting child-friendly approaches, LLN aims to foster educational environments where children can learn safely, confidently, and with dignity.
