LLN Organized an Orientation Program on Child Rights and Safeguarding
20 Dec. 2025, Lalitpur, Legal Literacy Nepal (LLN) successfully conducted an Orientation Program on "Child Rights and Safeguarding" at the Social Work Institute (SWI), Nakhu, Lalitpur. The program aimed to raise awareness among students on child rights, child protection mechanisms, and the elimination of corporal punishment in schools.
The program began with participant introductions, followed by an overview of LLN and its recent initiatives in legal literacy and child protection.
A focused discussion on corporal punishment was facilitated by Om Prakash Sen Thakuri, during which participants shared concerns regarding discriminatory disciplinary practices in schools, including unequal standards related to haircuts and personal appearance, as well as the use of physical punishment in some private schools.
Another session was facilitated by Prakash Sharma, emphasizing the role of children as a lobbying group in law-making and national legal processes, and highlighting the importance of meaningful child participation in decision-making.
The program was further supported by resource person Debaki Acharya, PhD who guided participants through interactive discussions and delivered a comprehensive presentation on child rights and child protection. Following this session, participants actively engaged in a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and presented the outcomes of their group discussions.
Participants also took part in experience-sharing sessions facilitated by foreign guests from France and the United Kingdom. These sessions covered a comparative analysis of issues such as school dress codes, parental punishment linked to school attendance, homeless children, the use of gadgets in schools, examination systems, freedom to choose subjects of interest, and the role of child clubs in France, United Kingdom and Nepal.
The program concluded with a collective commitment by students to reject corporal punishment and promote child-friendly and safe learning environments. The event ended with feedback collection, a group photograph, handing over certificate of participation and light refreshments.
Legal Literacy Nepal (LLN) continues to work towards ensuring safe, inclusive, and violence-free environments for children through sustained legal awareness and advocacy initiatives.
The program was supported by DKA Austria.
